Mass Media today

Last class:  Minority Report, Bjork, advertisement (and the difference between advertisement and PR).  The only things that still remain are the second paper and presentation Tuesday of finals week.  After class, I may have polished off a whole bottle of wine all by myself (I think this because I'm having an out-of-skull experience (though not an out-of-body experience) as I type this)

Mass media today

Was a review class with focus on preparing for the second paper.  And the due date for the second paper got pushed back by another half week  (:  so now it's due on the day of the final (i.e. a week from today).  In the words of James Wright,

There must be something very beautiful in my body,
  I am so happy.

Mass media today (Friday, April 22)

Propaganda.  Pure coincidence  (:  and I would like to add:  Even though in Persuasion class we spent the week on Hoffer's model for propaganda, I managed to keep my mouth shut, I didn't try to show off in Mass Media class with what we had learnt on Hoffer.

In Mass Media class, we covered a model of propaganda according to some guy called Edward Bernays, whose main claim to fame seems to have been that he was some kind of nephew of Sigmund Freud

Mass media, Tuesday, April 19

Remember Pearl Harbor, Walter Benjamin, TED talk by Eli Pariser.  Another music video analysis due at the end of the next week.  Presentations (of that second music video analysis) for finals.  Still can't stand Walter Benjamin, have hated him since the first time I encountered him in some German class (way back when).  I'm just a supertaster  and Walter Benjamin is a phenylalanine strip

Mass media today (Tuesday April 12)

The freedom of speech v. copyright thing.  Turns out the music industry basically has zero sense of humour and the scene is much tougher than what we learnt about visual arts when I took the photo classes with Dana.

Today in class we watched half of this documentary, so I watched the whole documentary after class.  We're planning to watch the rest of the documentary in class on Friday, so I'm half a week ahead of the curve for the moment  :)

Mass media today (Friday, April 8)

Noam Chomsky and his model for propaganda, as seen in excerpts from a three-hour documentary called Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media from way back when in 1992.  The five filters are: ownership, advertising, sourcing, flak, and fear.

Mass media, April Fools' Day

Still on the TV chapter.  We discussed how TV changed music from being just sound to being something audio-visual.  I thought of Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini (1960) and its 1990 music video version by Bombalurina  :)  both of which topped the charts btw.  We discussed Video Killed the Radio Star (1979) and Internet Killed the Video Star (2010).  In this way we covered 50 years today.  And I could try to take it another 80 years back, all the way back to Nietzsche, who killed God in Die froehliche Wissenschaft (1882), but I have more stuff to write tonight, so I shall shut my mouth right here for now  :)
