Mass Media today (Tuesday, March 29)

So we started talking about television, in that we revisited the hypothesis that stuff might be media constructs, with special emphasis to the question whether class might be a media construct.  We did adopt a broad definition of class, distinguishing economic class, social class, cultural class, political class, etc., and addressing each of those in turn.

We also watched a documentary on that topic, which, of course, was pretty meta, being that a documentary, too, is a part of media  :)  We did not finish the chapter and plan to continue on Friday

Mass Media, Tuesday, March22

Watched another documentary, but I've decided to quit chasing the documentaries.  Finished up the radio chapter.  Alan Freed (including this show), also Tin Pan Alley, and this video.  No class on Good Friday, so we actually have a whole week before we have class again  :)

Mass media, Friday, March 18

So we finally caught a break:  Class got cancelled today  :)  and about time, too, because winter has been such a disappointment this year

So I went to the Grand Rapids Public Library and got a copy of the documentary Before the Music Dies (excerpts of which we had watched in class on Tuesday), and I just finished watching it.  Much gorgeous music, of course

About the segments (of the documentary) that addressed Clear Channel:  We have, in fact, also heard Clear Channel's side of the story (when we took CN 185 (Intro to Radio)), and they are, in fact, also themselves struggling (to some extent)

And, by the way, when I took CN 185, we also addressed the changing nature of music discovery in that class

Much gorgeous music in this documentary.

Mass media: more documentaries

So yesterday we watched bits and pieces from another documentary.  I was planning to watch the whole thing afterward, but I couldn't find a free copy of this one online  :(  I'll get it from the library at some stage.

Mass Media in the break :)

So I just finished watching this movie because it had come up in the documentary of cutting and montage (The Cutting Edge) (that I had watched before break).

So

(1) yes, it's a masterpiece of montage, just as advertised  :)

(2) it's also a masterpiece of cinematography (which I noticed because I had also watched the documentary on cinematography, Visions of Light, before break)

(3) it's also a masterpiece, period, and, unless you're looking for them specifically or something, you wouldn't separately notice either the montage or the cinematography.

Highly recommended  :)

Mass Media March 1

On Tuesday we did the chapter on video games.  All the world's a game/And all the men and women merely gamers, etc.  :)  We hit the following keywords: LAN (local area network), first-person perspective game, gamification, video game, MUD (multiuser dimension), and MMO (massively multiplayer online roleplaying game).
