Mass Media blog entry 4 and a half

I watched The Man with the Movie Camera yesterday.  Three reactions:

  1.  The movie is a masterpiece of montage,
  2.  A split screen shot with opposite Dutch angles in the two sides is a creepy thing, and
  3.  I think Leni Riefenstahl in the nineteen thirties did even more effective work in this direction (i.e. in propaganda documentaries).

Mass Media blog entry 4

Chapter 2 yesterday.  Chapter 2 is about "Convergence and the Reshaping of Mass Communication", and here's the keywords we hit: convergence, media multitasking, platform, conglomeration, globalization, hypercommercialism, audience fragmentation.

Well, at least we talked about hypertext (and its non-linearity).

Mass Media blog entry 3

finished the theories chapter yesterday.  New keywords from the book: aggressive cues model, catharsis, desensitization, stereotyping; new keywords out of the book: underrepresentation, prosocial media.  Plus watched some videos then criticized those videos (here I mean "criticized" in more than one sense).  At around 2 o'clock on a Friday afternoon in the West Michigan winter.

But still the sun is up again today, and here's Colour Record No. 319, Side A:

Mass Media blog entry 2

So yesterday we skipped over to chapter 13, just because we wanted to have good luck  :)  It's the chapter on theories and effects of mass comm.  War of the Worlds came up.  Because the professor also studied poli sci, I expected Goebbels to come up as well  :)  but he didn't

I caught the following keywords: micro-level effects, macro-level effects, administrative research, critical research, transmissional perspective, ritual perspective, mass society theory, limited effects theory, cultural theory, meaning-making perspective, and representation.  We watched a video on that last one (i.e. on representation).

Mass Media blog entry 1

Here’s blog entry zero.

About this Mass Media class:  The notice on the shelf in the bookstore said they should have used copies too—and a used copy would cost almost fifty dollars less than a new one—but I saw only new copies on the shelf.  So I got a new copy, and the bookstore was going to give me a heads up when they got a used copy, and I was going to go back and exchange … and the deadline to exchange was yesterday, and they didn’t get a used copy yet, which is why I’m almost fifty dollars deeper in the hole  L

Yesterday in class, we hit the following seven things from chapter one:  mass communication, culture, technological determinism, media literacy (incl. Silverblatt’s seven-point programme), genre, production values, and The Gutenberg Galaxy.

Other than that, David Bowie died last Sunday—und noch desselben Tages empfing eine respektvoll erschütterte Welt die Nachricht von seinem Tode—and we watched one of his music videos in class yesterday, and we pointed out stuff about (a) the audio, (b) the visual, and (c) the narrative.

314A

This semester, I again have a class (Mass Media) that wants me to maintain what it calls a "learning log."  This time around, the log is 25 percent of my grade  :)  So yeah, from time to time I shall write, as part of this blog, a live log of me reading the textbook (which is this book).
