It's day one :)

Okay, I'm ready to post my first-ever attempt at flash fiction.  And---by way of thanks to you for reading my beginner's pieces---I'll also post, along with my own efforts, one classic flash fiction piece every day.  Here's my first piece:

100 Douglas Ct.

The hard-kicked sun leapt lazy off the rustpatched garage door.  The cracks in a shallow driveway are short, but the grass in the narrow yard was, like days of August, long.

The squeaky sneakers ran forward, but they ran too far, so it was behind them that the sun bounced.  The dark blue van drove down the cul-de-sac, and the sun dove for its spinning wheels.

The sneakers turned about, then raised a fist and yelled “Bass-tel!” at the back of the shrinking van.

Then they stepped into the yard, where the sun had come to rest in the grass.

And here's today's famous piece.  It works with just one sentence, and it's only 43 words long (less than half as long as mine), and how it works!---

Housewife

By Amy Hempel

She would always sleep with her husband and with another man in the course of the same day, and then the rest of the day, for whatever was left to her of that day, she would exploit by incanting, “French film, French film.”
